Why cubic boron nitride composites become the choice of superhard tools

2023/6/1 15:37:11

In terms of tool material selection, more and more people choose cubic boron nitride composite sheets. The selection of cubic boron nitride composite sheet is not unreasonable. As a material with hardness second only to diamond and better chemical inertness than diamond, cubic boron nitride composite sheet does not react with iron group metals and their alloy materials, and has anti-oxidation properties. Higher advantages are more and more popular with people. Therefore, cubic boron nitride composite sheets have gradually become the best choice for superhard tool materials.
For a long time, cubic boron nitride was considered to not exist in nature, until 2009, scientists from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory at the University of California, Riverside, and researchers from Chinese and German research institutions Together with our colleagues, we found this mineral in the chrome-rich rock of the ancient oceanic crust at a depth of about 306km in the southern mountainous area of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China. It formed crystals at a high temperature of about 1300°C and a high pressure of 118,430 atmospheres. The team named the new mineral qingsongite (the suffix ite stands for mineral) after Fang Qingsong, a professor at the Institute of Geology of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences. The International Mineralogical Association officially recognized this as a new mineral, cubic boron nitride, in August 2013. Its atomic structure is similar to the carbon atomic structure in diamond, so it has the characteristics of high density and hardness comparable to diamond, and is often used as abrasive and tool material.
